Jonathan Prince shapes stone and steel into elegant, expressive, abstract sculptures, drawing inspiration from the Modernist emphasis on materiality, form, and precision, and influence from masters like Constantin Brancusi, Jean Arp, and Jacques Lipchitz.

 

 "For me, the solidity and strength of stone and steel have always had a profound effect," he says. "These materials [...] connect me to the earth and its history." 

 

Prince's process, which requires both heavy machinery and careful handwork, merges man and machine.  His forms are inspired by nature, science, the human body, and ancient artifacts-fissures, ruptures, punctures, and gashes are recurrent motifs, often interrupting the highly polished, smooth surfaces of his sculptures, revealing contrasting rough and raw interiors.

 

Prince often works on a large scale, making his sculptures suitable for public and commercial installations, in addition to home display. Many of his works may be displayed indoors or outdoors. His work may be found in more than 30 commercial and public collections. One piece was recently acquired for the Broad Museum. The works are unique.
