Howard Schatz: Beauty Studies--Black, Not White

Lawrence Fine Art will survey Howard Schatz's career-long fascination with the female form, focusing on his iconic "Beauty Study" works, his "Underwater Studies," and his "Dance Studies." The survey will specifically focus on African-American women subjects.

Definitions of beauty change over time, but there is something timeless about the beauty and grace of the female form. Indeed, the portrayal of beautiful women is a hallmark of the western art tradition. For too many years, these representations were focused exclusively on white women. Like so many other things in the art world, this is now changing --rapidly.

Schatz's work goes back 25 years, so perhaps it is correct to say that he was "woke" before "woke" was a term.
