Morris Shulman: The Monhegan Abstractions

Lawrence Fine Art is pleased to present "Morris Shulman: The Monhegan Abstractions" opening Saturday September 9 and continuing for three weeks.
Like many of his compatriots of the time, Shulman (1912-1978) transitioned from representation to abstraction in the post-WWII period after studying at the National Academy of Design, at the Art Students League and with Hans Hoffman. Yet, his work, whether or abstraction or representation, was inspired by a keen sense of place--in this case, Monhegan Island, Maine, where he returned year-after-year to paint. The work shows the influence of the topography, the fauna, and the water of Monhegan Island. Monhegan Island has been an artist's colony for more than 100 years and has influenced Impressionist painters, early Modernist painters and AbEx painters alike.
Shulman was well-known in the day, but he died without children and his wife died shortly thereafter, so there was no one to insure his legacy. Lawrence Fine Art, through our Rediscovered Masters program, is committed to reintroducing fine artists like Shulman to the collecting public.
His work can be found in the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian, the Metropolitan Museum, the Carnegie Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, the Jewish Museum, Bates College in Lewiston, Me, Vassar College, the Rose Art Museum of Brandeis College, among others.
